WAP started in 2012 when eight young women decided to work together to provide gender and women’s rights training, raise awareness, and to promote advocacy and education.
2015: We partnered with the Women Self-Promotion Movement and held our first training for socially and economically disadvantaged young women and girls. In 2016, 2018 and 2019 with financial support received from Alert Fund for Youth, XminY Solidarity Fund, Spark, Rockflower and Lush Charity Pot, WAP managed to implement four successful campaigns against child marriage “Give us Books Not Husbands.”
2015-2016: With financial support received from Stichting Projecten Overal, WAP implemented a successful women’s economic empowerment project in Marondera, a small town located at about 72 km east of Harare. WAP supported a group of 40 women (widows and single mothers) with startup capital in the form of 2000 broiler chicks. Before the chicks were distributed, WAP trained the women in Entrepreneurship, Business Leadership and Management Training to enable them gain the capacity to be able to manage their business.
In August 2017: WAP received financial support from MIVA Netherlands to procure means of transport (Nissan Hard Body) twin cab to help support the work of the organisation
April 2018: We successfully implemented a pilot “Stand up, Speak out” training to end child marriage in partnership with Girls Not Brides UK. The main goal was to test a “Stand up, Speak Out” manual, and to get insights and feedback from girls and trainers who participated.
2018: We launched our program Ambassadors Against Child Marriage Program, with help from the Washington-based Advocacy Project and Rockflower. Our aim was to select tough-minded girls from underserved communities to empower girls and families that were vulnerable to child marriage. We trained five Ambassadors.
2019: We moved into income generation and trained two teams of girls to produce soap in Chitungwiza and Epworth. The first results were so encouraging that we secured generous grants from Action for World Solidarity in Berlin, and Dining for Women in the US.
